A Letter to God Summary
This is a story of a farmer whose name is Lencho. In this story we can see that there is a farmer who lives with his family on a ranch. Lencho had done all the hard labour in his field. He had sowed the seeds but now was waiting for the rains to come and ripe the corn. He was doing nothing but looking at the sky for rain. After some time it started raining Lencho went out to feel the rain on his body and enjoy it. He said that these aren’t rain drops but new coins he named them as - Big drops ten cent pieces and the small ones fives. As Lencho was enjoying, in a moment his pleasure turned into sadness because suddenly a strong wind started to blow and hailstorms began to fall and soon the valley and the cornfield turned white as if covered by salt. His harvest (corn) was completely destroyed. Lencho was broken because of this but he had a strong faith in God. He wrote a letter to God asking for 100 pesos so that he can again sow the fields and save his family from starving. He posted the letter in the post office when the postman saw the letter he laughed at it as it was addressed to God but when they read the letter they became serious and appreciated Lencho’s unquestioned faith in God. Then the postmaster put a part of his salary and asked other employees at the post office for charity. They were able to collect a little more than 50 pesos. The postmaster put the money in an envelope and addressed it to Lencho. On Sunday Lencho went to the post office and asked if there was a letter for him. The postmaster handed over that envelope to Lencho. Lencho was not surprised to see the money but when he counted the money it was not much as mentioned in the letter. He was sure that God could not have made the mistake so he wrote another letter to God and put it in the letter box. After Lencho left the post office the employees and postmaster read his letter in which Lencho had complained that he has received only seventy pesos although he asked for hundred pesos. He also requested God to send him the rest of the money on time and he also asked God not to send the money through mail as he thinks that post office employees were a bunch of crooks and might have stolen his money.

यह एक किसान की कहानी है जिसका नाम लेंचो है। इस कहानी में हम देख सकते हैं कि एक किसान है जो अपने परिवार के साथ खेत में रहता है। लेंचो ने अपने क्षेत्र में कड़ी मेहनत की थी। उसने बीज तो बो दिए थे लेकिन अब बारिश आने और मकई पकने का इंतजार कर रहा था। वह बारिश के लिए आसमान की ओर देखने के अलावा कुछ नहीं कर रहा था। कुछ देर बाद बारिश होने लगी, लेंचो अपने शरीर पर बारिश को महसूस करने और उसका आनंद लेने के लिए बाहर चला गया। उन्होंने कहा कि ये बारिश की बूंदें नहीं हैं बल्कि नए सिक्के हैं, उन्होंने इन्हें नाम दिया - बड़ी बूंदें दस सेंट टुकड़े और छोटी बूंदें फाइव। जैसे ही लेंचो आनंद ले रहा था, एक पल में उसकी खुशी उदासी में बदल गई क्योंकि अचानक तेज हवा चलने लगी और ओले गिरने लगे और जल्द ही घाटी और मकई के खेत सफेद हो गए जैसे कि नमक से ढंका हो। उसकी फसल (मकई) पूरी तरह से नष्ट हो गई। इस बात से लेंचो टूट गया लेकिन उसकी ईश्वर में गहरी आस्था थी। उसने भगवान को पत्र लिखकर 100 पेसो की मांग की ताकि वह फिर से खेतों में बुआई कर सके और अपने परिवार को भूख से मरने से बचा सके। उन्होंने पत्र को डाकघर में पोस्ट कर दिया, जब डाकिया ने पत्र देखा तो वह उस पर हँसा क्योंकि यह भगवान को संबोधित था, लेकिन जब उन्होंने पत्र पढ़ा तो वे गंभीर हो गए और भगवान में लेन्चो की निर्विवाद आस्था की सराहना की। तब पोस्टमास्टर ने अपने वेतन का एक हिस्सा लगाया और डाकघर के अन्य कर्मचारियों से दान के लिए कहा। वे 50 पेसो से थोड़ा अधिक एकत्र करने में सक्षम थे। पोस्टमास्टर ने पैसे एक लिफाफे में रखे और उसे लेंचो को संबोधित किया। रविवार को लेंचो डाकघर गया और पूछा कि क्या उसके लिए कोई पत्र है। पोस्टमास्टर ने वह लिफाफा लेंचो को सौंप दिया। लेन्चो को पैसे देखकर कोई आश्चर्य नहीं हुआ लेकिन जब उसने पैसे गिने तो उतने नहीं थे जितने पत्र में लिखे थे। उसे यकीन था कि भगवान गलती नहीं कर सकता इसलिए उसने भगवान को एक और पत्र लिखा और लेटर बॉक्स में डाल दिया। लेनचो के डाकघर छोड़ने के बाद कर्मचारियों और पोस्टमास्टर ने उसका पत्र पढ़ा जिसमें लेनचो ने शिकायत की थी कि उसे केवल सत्तर पेसो मिले हैं जबकि उसने सौ पेसो मांगे थे। उसने भगवान से बाकी पैसे भी समय पर भेजने का अनुरोध किया और उसने भगवान से यह भी प्रार्थना की कि वह मेल के माध्यम से पैसे न भेजे क्योंकि उसे लगता है कि डाकघर के कर्मचारी बदमाशों का एक समूह थे और हो सकता है कि उन्होंने उसके पैसे चुरा लिए हों।
